3 min read

We call her the goddess of dresses. In this interview, EDIALE KINGSLEY caught up with founder and Creative Director, OYINDAMOLA AKINFENWA, of JANORE Fashion Brand. creative, to find out how she makes these standout pieces for that has blown our mind.

“generally I overthink things, if the designs will come out right, if anyone would like it…”

After you ‘blew’ on social media. I imagined you must be too busy to have new customers again. Is that the case?

I have space for new customers. The dress is available in other colors too.

This is N15,000

This ( not available)

The gold is 12,000. The brown 10,000

Tell us how you started and a bit about you. When did you start the clothing business? Also tell us more about your brand?

Well I just started out the brand in July, still trying to establish it as a big brand one day at a time. Janore is a bespoke fashion brand, all the dresses are made on order to fit the client.

And most times we offer versatile dresses which can be worn in different ways and styled to the taste of the owner and the interesting part is, when someone buys the dress they can also invent new styles themselves from the design .

Also it helps save money because you get different styles for the price of one.

How has the journey been?

It’s been a rollercoaster because generally I overthink things, if the designs will come out right, if anyone would like it, if I’m doing the right thing and all that. But in the end, it always works out.

What else do you do? You stay in Ibadan. We know fashion is big in Lagos. Any plans to relocate or are you still reaching the world from Ibadan?

I’m a law student at the Nigerian law school. I have bigger plans regarding location for my business which will be known later on.

Tell us about your challenges in making these clothes?

Well challenges are trying to make sure that the other styles also fit and will work on a normal day, to make sure the styles are practical in real life.

People who want to buy from outside these countries how do they patronize you? Or how will they get their clothes? Or no current plan for that yet?

I ship internationally as well. Through courier service ( I use dhl now ).

You have sponsors? Are you willing to have investors and partners?

Right now I’m not interested in this.

Tell us where you see your brand in 5years time?

Omg worldwide brand to be very honest. Also the go-to brand for versatile wears.

And which school did you go? How was you growing up? When did you decide it was going to be fashion?

Afe Babalola University. Growing up was nice . I was mostly in school cause I went to a boarding school actually. But then it was great.

I just stumbled on it because I never had fashion in mind growing up, I just realized I could actually make clothes then I decided to go into it.

Who inspire you in the fashion industry?

Well honestly , since I never had fashion in mind growing up, there wasn’t anyone. I’ve always admired Tyra Banks because I was so interested in being a model but since fashion came into the picture, I’ve been inspired by a whole lot of Nigerian designers and brands actually. Deola Sagoe, because I actually started experimenting my fashion ideas with Ofi .

Will you be open to train people? If yes what’s the cost?

Right now, no.

Do you have a physical store?

Finally how many hands do you working for you at Janore?

Right now just four. But as time goes on I intend to keep expanding.

Any other thing you like to say to the millions of readers?

I just want to add a tip which is, most times I’m able to expand my creative thinking by allowing myself to make mistakes, sometimes costly mistakes but other times, it creates the perfect dress.
